How to Access Work Through WorldCat

In the cases where the authors of this book have cited works that are not which are not available in the public domain, or not shared under a Creative Commons license, you can utilize the following step-by-step instructions to either access the works directly through your college or university, or place an interlibrary loan (ILL) to access the works.

To find any work that is not included within this text, select the link in the chapter of this text, which will open a new tab to the WorldCat entry for the work. WorldCat is “the world’s most comprehensive database of information about library collections” (OCLC, 2025), and will automatically connect to your college or university’s library catalog, or identify the closest library to your location which has access to the work.

To access the work through your college or university library, follow these steps, and if you are not able to get access to the work, contact your college or university librarians for further assistance!

  1. Start by selecting the link in the chapter of this textbook, which will open a new tab to the WorldCat entry for the work.
  2. If you are on campus, or logged into your library account on your device, WorldCat should immediately provide you with options for accessing the work, via a pop up which gives the option “Go to https://_your school_.on.worldcat.org,” or “stay on WorldCat.org.” Select your institution option, and then select “continue.”
  3. After the webpage reloads, on the far right of the screen, you will be directed to your Access Options, choose one of the two options below.
    1. If available, select “View full text,” which will then automatically open the document for the work, through your institutional access.
    2. If not available, select “Request through Interlibrary Loan,” which will direct you to your library’s catalog to request the work through interlibrary loan.
      • Note: For SUNY students, navigate to the “Get it” section of the record, and sign in using your credentials in the yellow highlighted section. Next, select “Interlibrary Loan” and fill out the applicable information and select “Submit Request.” You will receive a notification from your library when the article is ready to be downloaded or the book is ready to be picked up.

If you are not associated with a college or university library, follow these steps to identify what is the nearest library which has access to the work you are looking for, and further options for accessing the work.

  1. Start by selecting the link in the chapter of this textbook, which will open a new tab to the WorldCat entry for the work.
    1. If the work you are looking at is a print book, you will see various access options on the right hand side of the page, including “view access options,” “borrow” options from the closest libraries, and “buy this item.”
    2. If the work you are looking for is an article, you will see various access options on the right hand side of the page including “access from your libraries,” “borrow” options from the closest libraries, and “buy this item.”

If the work is a physical book, you could either go to the library which owns the work, and inquire about taking the book out as a community user. Alternatively, you could contact your public library, and inquire if they would be able to assist you in accessing that work via interlibrary loan. If you are looking for an article, you could try both of the above pathways, however, it is likely that access to electronic resources will be limited to community users.

If the above pathways are unsuccessful, you could find the original publisher of the work and purchase access to the work, or use one of the alternative open access works which were identified in the chapter of this text.
